Located just east of downtown Atlanta, Ormewood Park lies south of the I-20 and between Moreland Avenue and East Confederate Avenue. It is one of the six neighborhoods included in the South Atlantans for Neighborhood Development organization, or better known as S.A.N.D.S. This organization is committed to the re-development of the Southeast area of Atlanta Real Estate.
The unique neighborhood of Ormewood Park was developed in the early 1890's as one of Atlanta's early streetcar suburbs and named for the president of the Atlanta Electric Light and Trolley Company, Aquilla J. Orme. He extended the downtown streetcar line to include the Old Soldiers Home on East Confederate. Having the streetcar in the area sparked an explosion of residential development which featured Craftsman-style bungalows.
After World War I residential development in the Ormewood Park included many brick cottages. Then later, towards the end of World War II, another growth period took place and is noted by a number of framed cottages and ranch style homes that were popular during that era. There were also a number of Tudor and Victorian homes that had been built and which today are experiencing ongoing restoration.
Southeast Atlanta is on the upswing, socially and economically, after some significant downturn in the early 1970s caused it to fall into disrepair and decay. Ormewood Park homes for sale include a unique blend of style and offer several of the vintage Craftsman bungalows and frame cottages as well as a few of the more ornate Victorian houses.
A new generation of buyers has begun to discover the architectural charm in this south Atlanta area, making it a hot spot for real estate activity. As you drive through the town you well might notice many areas that are transforming especially on Moreland Avenue. The growth of the area is exciting and new homeowners can be in on the ground floor of the all progress that is taking place here. The area's diversity is a plus, too, with a mix of singles and marrieds, and a wide range of ages.
There is a lack of commercial development in Ormewood Park, but on Moreland Avenue there are some of the East Atlanta shops which are within walking distance. North Ormewood Park is a separate but similar neighborhood, divided from Ormewood Park by Glenwood Avenue. There are plans for including houses and a variety of shops and stores. As an added benefit to the Ormewood Park neighborhood, nearby Glenwood Park brought convenient shopping and restaurants to Ormewood Park residents.
There are two parks, Grant Park and Brownwood Park, within walking distance, and Brownwood is known as one of the best dog walking parks in the city. There are people out jogging and walking their dogs most afternoons or evenings and the neighborhood has a strong pride of ownership. A lot of the new Ormewood Park homes for sale are built with the older craftsman-style touches and some have historic classic moldings and porches. Though not all of Ormewood Park streets have sidewalks, the neighborhood is still a fairly walkable neighborhood. |
