Kirkwood/Edgewood

Located on Atlanta's east side, Kirkwood traces its origins to a residential development which had its beginnings in the 1870s, but it wasn’t incorporated as a municipality until 1899 with its own city council and mayor, and boasted of having its own water system, fire department, and schools.  Then in 1922, Kirkwood residents voted to be annexation into the city of Atlanta.  Born on the streetcar line, streetcars provided express service to and from Atlanta three times daily, and Kirkwood continued to rely on this mode of transportation until as late as the 1950's.

In the 1980's, the urban middle-class began to renovate the neighborhood's inventory of historic housing along Kirkwood/Edgewood HomesHoward Street.  One of the renovation projects from Kirkwood's early history was the Kirkwood School.  This building is now part of the Kirkwood Loft Apartments which were renovated in 1997 to the tune of a million dollars.

While no one today would consider Kirkwood a suburb of Atlanta, an early tour book described the neighborhood as an “area of beautiful suburban villas.”  Originally developed as a suburb of Atlanta lined with remarkable old style villas, Kirkwood real estate is now firmly situated within the city of Atlanta.

Kirkwood homes for sale have kept pace with the renewed appreciation of the neighborhood's aesthetic value.  Some of those most notable examples are found between Howard and College Avenues where some of the finest and largest houses of the community featuring Queen Anne, Arts and Crafts, and Victorian Folk styles can be found.  In addition Kirkwood has a park with a field large enough to accommodate baseball or softball.  There are also tennis and basketball courts, a playground, and a large community center.

Truly rich in history, Kirkwood’s rise, its fall into decline, and its more recent revival as a neighborhood which is attracting middle and upper-middle income homeowners back into the area illustrate how socio-economic forces and other issues have shaped this historic inner-city community.

Kirkwood homes for sale offer great opportunities for homeownership in one of the South's fastest growing cities.  In recent decades Kirkwood homes have been experiencing an increase in housing prices as well as increased demand, and projections for the future for the neighborhood are looking bright.  And with the unprecedented growth of Atlanta, Kirkwood can certainly no longer be considered a suburban district.

Kirkwood has a highly developed sense of community pride.  It has a first-class security infrastructure with its police force and fire stations and owners of Kirkwood homes can feel proud as well as safe in this community.  Kirkwood home for sale offer all the amenities and services that one could possibly want in a modern city setting, including a first-class school district located in one of the oldest and best developed educational systems in the South.  The schools are dedicated to keeping up with technological development and new advances in educational techniques, and that means that owners of Kirkwood homes can count on their children getting the best possible education.
