As one of Atlanta's more historic neighborhoods, East Lake is located on the family-oriented east side of Atlanta, conveniently located 4.5 miles from downtown. East Lake homes offer 1940s bungalows, cottages and is convenience to local restaurants, shops, and public transportation. East Lake has enjoyed a rebirth in recent years.
East Lake was developed from part of a plantation which was once owned by Civil War Col. Robert A. Alston. The Alston home, known as Meadow Nook, still stands across from the East Lake Golf Course. Col. Alston built this antebellum home in 1856 for his South Carolina bride. The second oldest home in Atlanta, it was occupied by Union Troops and thus spared from being destroyed during the Civil War.
In 1892, the East Lake Land Company was chartered and started acquiring land around the area which was then sub-divided into lots. A.C. Bruce, President of the East Lake Land Company was instrumental in getting a street car line built down East Lake Drive. The following year, streetcars ran on a 20-minute schedule which helped to increase the demand for the lots. Many of which were bought by wealthy Atlantans for country homes to escape the city during the summer.
In 1898, 65 men formed the Atlanta Athletic Club (AAC). Soon after, the Atlanta Athletic Club began looking for land to build a world-class golf course, and in 1908 East Lake Country Club opened. In 1908, East Lake was incorporated as a town and within a year, an automobile road was constructed from Ponce de Leon to the gates of East Lake Country Club making East Lake even more accessible.
Golf was not the only recreation at that time. East Lake already had an amusement park with swimming pool, hot dog stands, penny arcades, and even a steamboat on the lake. The lake itself was popular for fishing and boating. Today, East Lake is home to two golf courses: the East Lake Golf Club, home course of golf legend Bobby Jones, and is the site of PGA's annual Tour Championship; and the adjacent Charlie Yates Golf Course which is open to the public.
By 1916, a school building had been erected on Fourth Avenue, making East Lake a more desirable suburban neighborhood. According to an Atlanta Journal Constitution article in May of that year, demand for East Lake homes for sale was "almost to boom proportions". East Lake was annexed into the City of Atlanta in 1928.
Many famous people have been at the forefront in East Lake's history, including Coca-Cola founder Asa Candler, golfer Bobby Jones, and Johnny Weissmuller, winner of 5 Olympic gold medals and the first movie Tarzan.
Young urbanites are eager to relocate, renovate, and revitalize the charming East Lake homes and community and it is quickly becoming a very desirable Atlanta neighborhood. You can make it your home, too!
