This lovely neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia is over one hundred years old and was named for Edwin P. Ansley, a well-renown real estate mogul from the area who drew his inspirations for the development of this neighborhood from Frederick Law Olmsted who was a famous landscape architect and urban park designer known for the first garden neighborhood in Illinois.
Ansley had envisioned Ansley Park as a motorcar-oriented community and designed it with winding streets and lavish parks where the Atlanta elite could gather and play. He, along with several prominent Atlanta businessmen, purchased a plot of land which contained approximately 275 acres on the north side of Atlanta, and his dream became reality when Ansley Park became Atlanta, Georgia’s first garden suburb.
There are two major parks with Ansley Park, Winn Park and McClatchy Park, which wind their way through major parts of the suburb so that no residential lot is more than a ten-minutes walk. The Ansley Park Golf Club, touted as "twenty-seven of the most picturesque and demanding holes in the world of southern golf," is situated along the banks of Clear Creek which runs within the neighborhood.
Many streams meander through the trees in well-placed smaller parks which gives the neighborhood an almost pastoral flavor. Driving through the winding streets, you find these picturesque parks scattered all through the neighborhood as well as a historic buildings consisting of a church and elegant old homes which have the charm of the Old South. In fact the entire neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Ansley Park offers places of interest such as the Robert W. Woodruff Art Center, which includes the High Museum of Art. For many decades, Ansley Park was the home of Georgia’s Governor’s Mansion, and it is also known as the residence of the famous Gone with the Wind author, Margaret Mitchell. While the houses of the district are private residents, The Atlanta Preservation Center does conduct guided walking tours.
What makes Ansley Park special besides the historical significance is the fact that it remains an oasis in the very heart of bustling Atlanta. This quiet neighborhood located inside such a vibrant area, between Piedmont Avenue and Peachtree Street., has attracted a diverse and community-conscious group of residents. Ansley Park homes for sale offer new residents beautiful Colonial, Georgian Homes, as well as English Tudors, American Federal, and Craftsman style homes.
